Cherry blossoms are the hallmark of springtime in DC, so it's only natural to want photos featuring this gorgeous bloom. Our session with Vitalia and John started out by the monuments (one of the most popular places to catch the blossoms) and then we ventured out to Capitol Hill to get a few more iconic DC photos. This was absolutely a fun filled session - we were able to shoot at the National Mall, Capitol Hill, and a charming coffee shop with a little help from Uber and Capital Bike Share.
Cherry Blossom Portrait Session Tips
If you want photos with cherry blossoms, just know that cherry blossom season is very popular so here are a few helpful tips for your photography session.
Arrive early particularly if your session is anywhere on the National Mall. It will be crowded, so give yourself ample time to park and walk to your meeting location.
If possible, take Uber or Lyft or have a friend drop you off - it's much faster!
Generally the earlier the session the less crowded - so consider a sunrise session - especially if you are morning people. You may be able to get wider shots with the monuments without huge crowds in the background.
If you opt for a later session, you will still be able to get gorgeous shots - there may be close ups featuring a little bit of the blooms, the monuments and you of course!
If you are shooting on the National Mall, you need a permit and you may be asked to present it by a park ranger. Apply for your permit at least 6 weeks in advance if possible.
Consider alternate locations - there are a lot of locations in DC with cherry blossoms that are not on the national mall. So if you just want the blooms and don't have to have the monuments, this could be a perfect alternative. Hains Point is one such example.
Book early! Cherry blossom sessions are one of the most popular and tend to book quickly.
Be flexible. Sometimes mother nature, crowds and events may prevent you from getting the exact image you envisioned - just know that we will do our best to still capture some amazing images and will work with you to reschedule your shoot in the event up a torrential downpour.
Have fun! The most important thing - be yourself, relax and have fun!
