Monique’s 30th Birthday Photoshoot - Alexandria, VA Portrait Photographer

There is something special about celebrating a milestone birthday with a portrait session, and Monique’s 30th birthday shoot was all about stepping into a new decade with confidence, style, and a little bit of fun.

For her studio session, we kept the overall look clean and simple so the focus stayed on Monique. The dark backdrop gave us a beautiful, polished foundation while allowing each of her outfits to bring something different to the session.

We started with a white dress against the black background, creating a classic contrast that felt timeless and elegant. These portraits ranged from traditional smiling images to more relaxed poses, and we brought in her birthday cake for a few shots to make the milestone part of the story. The black-and-white heart-shaped cake with “Thirty” written on top was the perfect personal touch without overwhelming the photographs.

Her blue dress gave us an opportunity to change the mood. Against the black background, the look became a little more dramatic and editorial, especially with the sunglasses and seated poses. We also switched to a rich blue backdrop for a few images, creating a tone-on-tone look that complemented the dress beautifully and added another layer of variety to the gallery.

For the final look, Monique changed into a fitted green printed dress. We brought the posing lower to the ground for a more relaxed, confident feel and incorporated the cake again for a playful birthday portrait. The combination of the vibrant greens against the darker setting created a completely different energy while still fitting naturally with the rest of the session.

We also changed up the background a bit with touches of modern white window shots for a completely different look and feel.

One of the things I love about milestone birthday sessions is that they do not have to fit into one particular style. They can be glamorous, playful, sophisticated, sexy, traditional, or a combination of all of those things. Monique’s session gave us room to create a little of everything while keeping the photographs true to her.

 

Thirty is a milestone worth celebrating. Whether you want a simple portrait session, something more editorial, or photographs that incorporate meaningful details like a birthday cake, your session can be designed around how you want this chapter of your life to feel.
