Out of the Water: Glam Studio Shoot with Reflective Mylar

This glamorous portrait session in our Alexandria, VA studio was all about creativity, reflection, and texture — brought to life using reflective mylar and a dramatic lighting setup. Inspired by the high-fashion editorial looks made popular by photographers like Lindsay Adler, we set out to replicate the concept with our own twist.

Working with the stunning Sofia Pelligrino, a talented actress and model, we aimed to recreate a shimmering “water feel” using silver mylar and a 3-light Profoto setup. We opted for strobe lighting with modifiers to soften and sculpt the light. The results? Bold highlights, mirrored textures, and a modern, surreal aesthetic.

We added a pop of color with blue gel lighting on select shots to heighten the aquatic illusion — giving the impression of emerging “out of the water” or floating just beneath the surface. The sparkle from Sofia’s sequined gowns added another layer of dimension, perfectly catching the light and enhancing the reflective environment. We also used a star filter to add an extra touch of sparkle to Sofia's gowns.

This editorial-style shoot was the perfect fusion of glamour, creativity, and lighting precision — and a reminder that with the right setup, you can transform a small studio into a cinematic dream.
