How to Prepare for a Branding Studio Photography Session

Your brand is more than a logo or color palette—it’s *you.* It’s the way you show up, tell your story, and connect with your audience. So when it’s time to step in front of the camera for a branding studio session, you want to feel confident, prepared, and fully in your element.

Whether you’re a coach, creative, consultant, or small business owner, this guide will walk you through how to prepare for your branding studio photography session so you get photos that feel natural, polished, and powerfully on-brand.

1. Get Clear on Your Brand Story

Before anything else, take a moment to reflect: what do you want these photos to say about you? Are you warm and approachable? Bold and visionary? Calm and grounded? Your brand personality should guide every decision—from your outfit to your backdrop to your expression.

Ask yourself:

    • What do I want people to feel when they see my photos?

    • How do these images fit into my website, social media, or marketing?

    • What colors, moods, or themes align with my brand?

Pro tip: Create a Pinterest mood board or a simple collage of images you love. This gives your photographer a visual cue of your style and energy.

2. Plan Your Outfits Thoughtfully

When it comes to wardrobe, variety is key—but everything should still feel cohesive and true to you. Here’s how to make it work:

    • Choose 2–3 outfits: Bring a mix of looks: one that’s polished and professional, one that’s relaxed and lifestyle-friendly, and maybe something a little bold or playful.

    • Stick to your brand colors: You don’t need to match your logo, but wearing colors that complement your brand palette keeps everything feeling cohesive.

    • Avoid tiny patterns or logos: Solid colors or subtle textures usually photograph best and don’t distract from your face.

    • Accessorize with intention: A great pair of glasses, earrings, or shoes can make a statement—just don’t let them steal the show.

Bonus tip: Steam or iron your clothing the night before and bring them on hangers so they stay photo-ready.

3. Think About Props and Tools of Your Trade

What helps you do what you do? Your laptop, camera, paintbrushes, books, tablet, journal, coffee mug—it all matters. Incorporating props into your branding session makes your photos feel more personal and authentic.

Consider items that:

  • Represent your daily work or creative process

  • Showcase your product or service

  • Add visual interest to flat lays or workspace setups

Tip: Keep your props on-brand in terms of color and style. Even your notebook or coffee mug can reinforce your aesthetic!

4. Don’t Skip Hair and Makeup

Whether you go full glam or keep it natural, professional hair and makeup makes a difference—especially under studio lights. It’s not about looking different; it’s about enhancing your features and minimizing shine or unevenness that cameras might exaggerate.

Many branding photographers work with trusted HMU artists or can recommend one. You deserve to feel like your most confident, camera-ready self.

5. Know What to Expect from the Studio

Each studio space is different. Some are minimalist and modern, others are warm and creative. Ask your photographer ahead of time:

  • What kinds of backdrops or furniture will be available?

  • Will there be natural light, flash, or both?

  • How many outfit changes are allowed?

  • Is there space to sit, work, stand, and move comfortably?

The more you know ahead of time, the more confident and relaxed you’ll feel walking in.

Our studio space offers natural light as well as the space to shoot with flash. We offer a variety of backdrops, furniture and plenty of space to stretch out and get comfortable. We also have a client closet if you need wardrobe options and you can change outfits as often as your session time allows.

6. Practice Posing and Expressions

Don’t stress—we will guide you! But it never hurts to practice a few expressions and poses in the mirror before your session.

Think about:

  • How you naturally stand or sit when you're confident and relaxed

  • Your go-to smile: soft, bold, teeth or no teeth?

  • Mixing up your facial expressions (friendly, thoughtful, playful, focused)

  • Using your hands—holding a coffee cup, adjusting glasses, or resting on your hip

Pro tip: A good playlist is a vibe-setter! We will play some tunes to help you relax and set the mood.

7. Trust the Process

You've done the prep, now it’s time to enjoy the experience. Branding sessions should feel fun and collaborative—not stiff or overly posed. You might feel awkward for the first five minutes, but trust us: once you loosen up, the magic happens.

Remember, we are here to guide you, hype you up, and capture your best angles. Let go of perfection and lean into authenticity. That’s what people connect with most.

Bonus: What to Do After Your Branding Session

Once you’ve had your session, don’t let those gorgeous images sit in a folder!

  • Update your website and social media profile photos

  • Use them in your newsletters, email signature, or business cards

  • Plan your next few weeks of Instagram content around the images

  • Keep a few on hand for press features, podcasts, or speaking gigs

Great branding photos can elevate your whole business—so give them the spotlight they deserve!
