A Night at Signature Theatre: Play On!

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to attend the opening night of Play On! at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA, and it was a night to remember. The production is a vibrant mix of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the charm and style of the Harlem Renaissance, and the timeless music of Duke Ellington.

From the very first scene, the energy, music, and costumes transported the audience to a glamorous world of jazz, wit, and romance. The show is not just entertaining — it’s funny, soulful, and full of life.

A Standout Performance: Jalisa Williams as Vy

While the entire Play On! cast was incredible, I was especially moved by Jalisa Williams, who plays Vy. Vy is an aspiring songwriter who disguises herself as a man in order to break into the music industry. Watching Jalisa transform seamlessly between masculine and feminine identities was remarkable. Her comedic timing, commanding stage presence, and vocal power made her performance unforgettable.

Wesley Barnes as Jester

Another standout of the evening was Wesley Barnes, who masterfully portrayed Jester while also serving as the show’s dance captain. His role was pivotal, acting as the glue that connected each scene together. With sharp humor, quick wit, and dazzling singing and dancing, Wesley guided both the characters and the audience through the story. His performance brought a rhythm and flow that elevated the entire production.

 An Ensemble Full of Talent

The chemistry among the cast is undeniable. Each actor brought their own spark to the stage, and together they created a performance that felt fresh and deeply engaging. With strong direction and staging, the show moves effortlessly between comedy, music, and heartfelt moments.

Capturing the Celebration

After the curtain call, I had the honor of photographing some of the cast and crew during their opening night celebration. It was clear that the joy and artistry we saw on stage carried through to their offstage personalities. Capturing those smiles and stylish Harlem Renaissance–inspired looks was the perfect way to end the night.

Why You Should See Play On! at Signature Theatre

If you’re looking for theater in Northern Virginia or Washington DC, Play On! at Signature Theatre Arlington is a must-see. It’s more than just a Shakespeare adaptation — it’s a celebration of music, love, and creativity. Whether you’re a fan of Duke Ellington, jazz music, or simply want to enjoy a night of laughter and great performances, this show delivers it all.

Bravo to the cast, crew, and creative team for bringing this story to life in such a powerful way.
